Jos, Plateau State — Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Monday declared that Plateau State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, has effectively secured control of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpabio made the remarks during the official ceremony welcoming Muftwang into the APC in Jos, the Plateau State capital, where he described the governor as the party’s “newest bride.”

“The governor, the newest bride of the APC family in Nigeria and the performing governor of Plateau State, my brother Caleb—I have only one word for you,” Akpabio said. “Even in the Bible, it says Caleb declared we could go up to the mountain and conquer it. This moment means you have conquered the Government House in Plateau State again in 2027.”

The Senate President further stated that Muftwang’s entry into the APC signifies the party’s consolidation of power in the North-Central region.

“Today’s event is very significant. The North-Central region is now complete under the APC,” he said.

Addressing criticisms of the Tinubu administration, Akpabio dismissed claims that the government is targeting any religious group, describing such narratives as unfounded.

“People are spreading rumors as if this administration is targeting one religion. I don’t think we have had any government in the past 10 years that has been more inclusive,” he added.

Muftwang’s defection is seen as a major political development in Plateau State, with analysts describing it as a strategic boost for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
