Veteran filmmaker and CEO of Wale Adenuga Productions, Wale Adenuga, has dismissed claims by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka—popularly known as Papa Ajasco—that he is facing financial hardship.
Ayoyinka recently sparked reactions after alleging in a media interview that he was struggling financially despite his long-standing role in the hit television series Papa Ajasco and Company.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Adenuga described the claims as “false and misleading,” emphasizing that the actor has not been restricted from pursuing external opportunities. He clarified that Ayoyinka is only required to obtain approval before engaging in advertising deals involving the Papa Ajasco brand, in line with brand protection policies.
Adenuga further noted that there has been no significant dispute between both parties, describing Ayoyinka as a talented and versatile performer who closely resembles the original Papa Ajasco character created in 1976.
Providing context, the filmmaker revealed that Ayoyinka had a long-standing career with the Lagos State Government, where he served for over 30 years and was actively involved in the state’s cultural troupe.
Addressing public reactions to the actor’s claims, Adenuga said his response was necessary to correct misinformation and uphold the integrity of a franchise that has entertained millions of Nigerians for decades.
He also highlighted past support extended to Ayoyinka, including the provision of a car and access to multiple vehicles over time. According to him, the actor is also believed to own a house in Ogun State.
On the issue of brand usage, Adenuga stressed that restrictions on the “Papa Ajasco” name are essential to protect its identity and reputation, noting that actors are free to pursue other roles and business ventures outside the franchise.
Questioning the basis of the financial hardship claims, he pointed to Ayoyinka’s decades of public service and retirement benefits, asking what became of his earnings and gratuities.
Adenuga added that other cast members, including Pa James, continue to engage in independent projects, noting that actors typically spend only a few weeks annually on set, leaving ample time for other income-generating activities.
He reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining professional relationships and expressed appreciation to the public for its continued concern and support.
