Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 convicts serving at the Nigerian Correctional Service centres in Ilesa and Ile-Ife, in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The Governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Osogbo, noting that the clemency was exercised under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), and followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to the proclamation dated September 24, 2025, Adeleke officially remitted the remainder of the sentences of the affected inmates, thereby releasing them from all penalties and punishments.
A total of 29 inmates were freed from the Ilesa Correctional Centre, while seven others were released from the Ile-Ife facility. Many of the beneficiaries had been convicted of minor offences, including stealing and conspiracy, and had already served a substantial part of their prison terms.
Governor Adeleke described the gesture as a symbol of compassion, justice, and renewal, stressing that the move underscores his administration’s commitment to balancing justice with mercy.
“This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for true rehabilitation, reintegration, and a fresh start for these individuals,” he said.
The Governor directed relevant authorities to recognise the amnesty as a sufficient warrant under the state’s seal and authority, ensuring that the beneficiaries are fully reintegrated into society.
