Adebayo: “No Niger Deltan Should Be Poor”

Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has declared that no indigene of the Niger Delta should be living in poverty considering the region’s vast natural and human resources.

He made the statement on Friday in Abuja during the public presentation of “Hidden Treasures: An Exposition on the Rich Resources and Opportunities of the Niger Delta,” a new book authored by Chris Iyovwaye.

Adebayo described the Niger Delta as one of Nigeria’s richest yet most underdeveloped regions, blaming decades of poor leadership and underutilisation of resources for its stagnation. He noted that unlocking the region’s prosperity will require intentional effort, saying, “Every treasure requires digging.”

He highlighted three pillars needed to harness the region’s full potential: individual initiative, community participation, and government intervention. According to him, the wealth in the Niger Delta is sufficient not only to transform Nigeria’s economy but to rival the economic strength of some developed countries. He cautioned against shallow management of national wealth, stating that the people themselves remain the region’s greatest asset.

Chairman of the event, Maj.-Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd), urged Nigerians not to fear restructuring, insisting that every region possesses resources capable of driving sustainable development. He also encouraged citizens to continue supporting the Armed Forces in their efforts to maintain national peace and security.

Human-rights lawyer, Prof. Mike Ozekhome—represented by Prof. Ezekiel Abalagba—described the book as a practical guide for rejuvenating critical sectors in the Niger Delta. He stressed the need for transparent leadership, better infrastructure, and diversification into agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, petrochemicals, technology, and environmental restoration.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Mike Ogiadome, reaffirmed the Niger Delta’s pivotal role as Nigeria’s economic backbone. He called for long-term investments, including establishing a deep-sea port capable of attracting global investors, and endorsed the book as a valuable resource for policymakers and development partners.

Author Chris Iyovwaye said his book aims to dispel longstanding misconceptions by offering clear insights into the region’s wealth, challenges, and pathways to sustainable development.
