Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has acknowledged concerns surrounding the potential presidential bids of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Friday during an appearance on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, Abdullahi described the situation as a “conundrum” for the party, though he cautioned against labeling it the “greatest threat” to Nigeria’s democracy.

“I may not describe the situation in such superlative terms to say that it is the greatest threat to democracy at the moment. But is it a conundrum? Yes. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it something we are concerned about? Yes,” he said.

Abdullahi emphasized that while the matter is important, the ADC is currently focused on consolidating its national structures and preparing for a competitive performance in the 2027 polls.

“Nobody in ADC at this time is having a conversation about who the presidential candidates will be. We are still building our presence across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. That has preoccupied us, though we know the issue is one we must address,” he added.

On how the party plans to select its presidential candidate, Abdullahi explained that ADC may pursue a consensus approach. “The most important thing at this time is, when we get to that point, we’ll try to engineer a consensus. If we are not able to reach one, then we’ll open it up for everyone to contest. And it’s not just about Atiku and Peter Obi; there are other aspirants as well,” he said.

The ADC spokesperson also revealed that the party is in discussions with other political entities to build a stronger coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
