ADC Slams Wike Over ‘War’ Comment, Warns Against Intimidation Ahead of 2026 Polls

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised remarks attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing them as reckless and capable of heightening political tensions ahead of the February 21, 2026 elections.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party condemned what it called the minister’s “declaration of war” against candidates opposed to President Bola Tinubu.

The ADC said such rhetoric was irresponsible and dangerous, particularly at a time when the country is facing economic hardship, insecurity, and growing political distrust.

“We consider the Minister’s declaration of ‘war’ against so-called anti-Tinubu candidates not only irresponsible but dangerous in the current fragile atmosphere of our nation,” the statement read.

The party warned that inflammatory comments from public office holders could undermine democratic stability and further deepen existing divisions within the polity.

According to the ADC, the outcome of the 2026 general elections will be determined by Nigerian voters, not by any individual or political office holder. It alleged that attempts to intimidate opposition candidates and voters reflect fear and declining public support within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The opposition party further vowed to resist, through lawful and constitutional means, any move it perceives as an effort to subvert the will of the electorate.

“At a time when Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, insecurity, and deep political distrust, the last thing the country needs is inflammatory rhetoric from those entrusted with public office,” the statement added.

The comments come amid rising political activity and early positioning by parties ahead of the 2026 polls, with stakeholders urging restraint and issue-based campaigns to safeguard the nation’s democratic process.
