The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has berated the Presidency over its claim that President Bola Tinubu has no intention of extending his tenure beyond 2031, describing the remark as “arrogant and presumptuous.”
In a statement issued Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC stressed that President Tinubu’s mandate constitutionally ends in 2027, insisting that Nigerians would not want him to remain in power “a day longer.”
“The Presidency’s hurried reaction to Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu wants to be a life president only proves what many Nigerians have suspected—that this government is out of touch and dangerously complacent,” the statement read.
The party added that suggesting a possible stay in office until 2031 sends the wrong message.
“For the President to already speak of staying in office until 2031 suggests he sees re-election as a formality rather than a constitutional duty to prove his performance. Re-election is not automatic, and President Tinubu has not earned a second term,” the ADC said.
The party further argued that in less than two years, Tinubu’s administration has “deepened national divisions” rather than uniting Nigerians, raising doubts about his ability to secure the trust of the electorate in 2027.
