The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allegedly kick-starting his 2027 re-election campaign while Nigeria remains under a state of emergency.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the move as “cynically insensitive” and a betrayal of the seriousness required to address the country’s escalating insecurity.
According to the ADC, President Tinubu’s reported distribution of branded Hilux trucks, Land Cruisers and Hummer buses to political allies across the country shows he is “acting more like a candidate desperate for re-election than a leader confronting a national crisis.”
The party said Nigerians are enduring kidnappings, violent attacks and widespread displacement, yet the presidency appears more focused on building a partisan mobilisation network under the banner of “Renewed Hope Ambassadors.”
“Entire communities are under siege, children are being abducted, and security forces are overstretched,” the statement read. “At such a time of national agony, the ruling party’s attempt to prepare for campaign rallies is shocking and insensitive.”
The ADC also accused the President of breaching provisions of the Electoral Act, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not declared the campaign season for the 2027 general elections open.
“These actions clearly violate electoral rules, and we expect INEC to protect the credibility of the process,” the party added.
The ADC urged the President to prioritise governance and national security, warning that Nigeria’s recovery cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political ambition.
