A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ibrahim Mani, has declared that the wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) poses no threat to his party’s confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Daily Politics, a Trust TV programme, Mani dismissed the notion that the strength of a political party is determined by its size or the number of defectors it attracts. According to him, Nigerians are fully aware of the nation’s economic realities and will make informed choices when it’s time to vote.
“If you take the defection of a governor as the defection of an entire state into a party, then I’ll agree with you — but you definitely know that is not the case,” Mani said. “The people know what they want, and they know that the APC has failed at all levels. These defections are neither here nor there.”
He emphasized that the ADC remains focused on the people, who, he said, are “at the receiving end of today’s hardships” and will ultimately determine the country’s direction through the ballot box.
Mani also reaffirmed the ADC’s belief in democracy, rejecting any notion of a violent change of government. He stated that the party stands for a credible and transparent electoral process, one rooted in the will of the people rather than the “barrel of the gun.”
According to him, the ADC is confident that Nigeria’s democratic system is maturing and will continue to strengthen through the people’s collective resolve for change.
