ADC Blasts FG Over New 5% Petrol Tax: “Nigerians Need Relief, Not More Pressure”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has faulted the Federal Government’s introduction of a 5% tax on petrol, describing the move as a fresh burden on Nigerians already struggling with the harsh impact of fuel subsidy removal.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the timing of the tax was “deeply insensitive” and urged the government to suspend its implementation until citizens begin to feel genuine relief from ongoing economic reforms.

Abdullahi argued that while the government boasts of improved revenue collection and record earnings, its continued heavy borrowing raises serious questions about the sustainability of its fiscal policies.

“The ADC finds this tax deeply unfair at a time when the majority of Nigerians are still reeling from the effects of fuel subsidy removal. Regardless of the economic motives, what is clear is that citizens need relief, not more pressure,” Abdullahi said.

The opposition party further noted that despite government claims, the 2025 budgeted revenues remain far from realised, with statutory allocations and VAT receipts falling short of projections.
