Abuja-Kaduna Train Services Suspended After Derailment, NRC Launches Probe

ABUJA — The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor following Sunday’s derailment, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, announced the suspension at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, assuring passengers that safety remains the corporation’s top priority.

He disclosed that technical experts from the NRC, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and other relevant agencies are already on-site to determine the exact cause of the derailment and to recommend preventive measures.

Opeifa dismissed claims of poor maintenance, insisting that the NRC consistently adheres to global safety standards. He also confirmed that refunds have been processed for all affected passengers.

According to him, six passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident but have since received medical attention. He noted, however, that the actual number of passengers onboard is still being verified.

Meanwhile, the NSIB has officially opened a full-scale investigation into the derailment as authorities intensify efforts to restore safe and efficient services along the critical Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor.
