The Abia State government has addressed the recent arrest of Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, a Nigerian Army personnel, following a promise of medical assistance by Governor Alex Otti last week.
Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, stated that military authorities confirmed the soldier’s arrest was linked to an alleged fraud committed some time ago.
Ekeoma explained that Sergeant Amoke previously served in Abia State and sustained an injury while on duty. An NGO had brought him to the state government for medical support, prompting the Governor’s compassionate promise. “Governor Otti’s support was purely humanitarian, similar to assistance extended to other citizens and security personnel who suffer misfortune in the line of duty,” he said.
He emphasized that while the state government does not investigate corruption cases, it requested due diligence on Sergeant Amoke, which may have led to military action and his subsequent arrest.
The statement reaffirmed Abia State’s full support for the Nigerian Army’s disciplinary processes and reiterated the government’s commitment to providing financial, medical, and humanitarian aid to victims of misfortune, despite the ongoing controversy.
