A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has criticised the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, over his description of President Bola Tinubu as a failure.
Baba-Ahmed, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, said Tinubu inherited a country grappling with poverty, insecurity and weak institutions but had failed to deliver after three and a half years in office.
However, speaking on Vanguard’s Politics Hub on Wednesday, Sowunmi dismissed Baba-Ahmed’s assessment, describing him as a “Northern kid” and questioning his criticism of the President.
“That’s a Northern kid. What did I say? He’s a Northern kid. When you behave like a kid, you are a kid,” Sowunmi said.
The PDP chieftain, who disclosed that he grew up and attended school in Kaduna, said he was concerned about the development of Northern Nigeria and challenged the region’s leaders to account for the resources allocated to it over the years.
He questioned the impact of government spending and leadership in the region, arguing that Northern leaders should examine their own records rather than place the blame solely on Tinubu’s administration.
“All the resources that have been allocated to the North, where is the result?” he asked.
Sowunmi also invoked the legacies of former Nigerian leaders, including Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello, while urging Northern leaders to reflect on their responsibilities and the region’s development challenges.
He further argued that Baba-Ahmed did not speak for the entire North, rejecting any suggestion that his position represented the views of the region as a whole.
In a further attack, Sowunmi described the PRP chairman as a “rabble-rousing little rat”, intensifying the exchange between the two political figures over Tinubu’s performance and the state of governance in Nigeria.
