Sowore Demands Arrest, Prosecution of Those Behind Lekki Toll Gate Shootings

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Sowore made the demand in a post on his X account on Tuesday, October 20, marking the sixth anniversary of the protests, as he questioned why those responsible for the incident had yet to face prosecution.

“Where are the killers? Who ordered the shootings at Lekki Toll Gate? Who has been prosecuted?” he wrote.

The activist also called for investigations into the roles of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, military and police commanders, and other individuals he alleged were connected to the incident.

He further questioned reports that CCTV cameras at the toll gate had been removed before the shootings, urging authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

Sowore maintained that the #EndSARS protests were not limited to demands for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), but also represented opposition to police brutality, torture, extortion and extrajudicial killings.

He said the demands for accountability over the Lekki Toll Gate incident remained unresolved and pledged to reopen investigations if elected president in 2027.

According to him, his administration would seek to establish the chain of command surrounding the incident and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of rank or political connections.

The October 2020 #EndSARS protests began as a movement against police brutality, particularly abuses attributed to SARS, before spreading across Nigeria and attracting international attention. The Lekki Toll Gate shootings remain a major point of controversy in discussions about the protests and accountability for the events of that period.
