Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has praised Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy for promoting Nigeria’s image internationally, describing him and other Nigerian artistes as true ambassadors of the country.
Dangote made the remarks during a media briefing, recounting his first visit to Grenada, where he said Burna Boy’s image featured prominently on a billboard he saw upon arrival.
According to the billionaire businessman, the experience demonstrated the growing global influence of Nigerian music and the role of the country’s entertainers in projecting its culture and identity to international audiences.
“The first time I went to Grenada, the first billboard that I saw was Burna Boy. These are our ambassadors, and this is what we need to be talking about. We should not be talking about somebody in Nigeria who was caught with drugs elsewhere,” Dangote said.
He stressed the need for Nigerians to celebrate individuals whose achievements contribute positively to the country’s international reputation rather than allowing negative incidents to dominate public discourse.
Dangote’s comments highlight the increasing global recognition of Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, which has continued to attract international audiences and establish Nigerian artistes on major global platforms.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has emerged as one of Africa’s most prominent musical exports, earning international recognition for his contribution to the growth of Afrobeats.
The singer was also named among Forbes’ 15 African Icons, alongside notable personalities including Dangote, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Mo Abudu.
His recognition reflects the growing influence of African entertainers and other prominent figures in shaping the continent’s cultural and economic image on the global stage.
