Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has paid tribute to veteran actor Olu Jacobs, who died on Wednesday at the age of 84, describing his passing as a loss that goes far beyond the entertainment industry.
In a condolence statement posted on his official social media page, Atiku called Jacobs “an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors of Nigeria’s creative spirit.”
The former vice president noted that Jacobs became a household name across generations of Nigerians through his memorable roles, distinctive voice, and decades-long contribution to the country’s entertainment industry. He pointed out that Jacobs’ career predated Nollywood’s rise to global prominence, and that his pioneering work helped pave the way for younger actors who followed.
Atiku said Jacobs’ impact went beyond entertainment, noting that his performances became woven into the memories of Nigerians who grew up watching him on screen.
“The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him,” Atiku said.
The ADC candidate extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, actress Joke Silva, their children, and the wider Jacobs family. He also commiserated with Nollywood, the broader African creative industry, and the late actor’s admirers around the world, praying for the repose of his soul and for strength for those he left behind.
