The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for School Candidates, with 1,200,514 candidates obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Announcing the results on Wednesday in Lagos, the Head of the WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, disclosed that the successful candidates represent 61.54 per cent of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat the examination. He noted that the performance reflects a 1.42 percentage-point decline compared to the 2025 results.
According to WAEC, a total of 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, the Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea registered for the examination, while 1,950,726 eventually participated.
The council also revealed that 1,687,378 candidates, representing 86.50 per cent, obtained credits and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics.
A breakdown of the successful candidates who earned five credits, including English and Mathematics, showed that 558,883 (28.65 per cent) were male, while 641,631 (32.89 per cent) were female. Overall, 953,459 males and 997,267 females sat the examination, representing 48.88 per cent and 51.12 per cent, respectively.
Dr. Dangut disclosed that 1,834,695 candidates, representing 94.05 per cent of those who sat the examination, have had their results fully processed and released. However, the results of 116,031 candidates, representing 5.95 per cent, are still being processed.
He further stated that 1,213 candidates with special needs registered for the examination, including 137 visually impaired candidates, 491 with hearing impairments, 55 who were spastic or mentally challenged, and 41 physically challenged candidates.
On examination malpractice, WAEC said it withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59 per cent of the total number of candidates, over various forms of malpractice. The figure represents a reduction from the 9.70 per cent recorded in 2025.
“The increasing use of cell phones in the examination hall, despite the existing ban, and organised cheating in some schools remain major concerns,” Dr. Dangut said.
He added that supervisors and invigilators found aiding examination malpractice had been apprehended and would face appropriate sanctions through the respective State Ministries of Education.
Highlighting improvements introduced by the council, Dr. Dangut noted that the 2026 examination marked the second edition of the Computer-Based WASSCE for school candidates. He said WAEC also deployed the Digital Examiner Marking System (DEMS) to speed up result processing, introduced the serialisation of question papers to curb malpractice, and launched a new portal that enables candidates to generate e-PINs directly for result checking.
The council announced that candidates can now apply for digital certificates 48 hours after checking their results online. It also disclosed that registration for the 2026 WASSCE for Private Candidates (Second Series) is ongoing at a fee of ₦37,500, with walk-in registration available.
In addition, WAEC said its compiled past questions and answers are now available for purchase at ₦5,200 per subject combination.
Candidates are expected to access their results within 12 hours through the WAEC results portal, while hard-copy certificates will be available within 90 days.
The 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE was conducted between April 24 and June 19, 2026, with 102,708 examiners participating in the marking exercise across 88 centres.
WAEC also reiterated that the results of candidates sponsored by state governments indebted to the council would remain withheld until the outstanding payments are settled.
