Peter Obi: Competent Leadership Is Nigeria’s Greatest Wealth Ahead of 2027

BERLIN, Germany — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has said that competent leadership and good governance remain the most valuable assets Nigeria needs to unlock its vast economic potential.

Obi made the remark in a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday following his participation in a high-level roundtable organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin, Germany. The event, themed “Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond,” focused on the country’s political and economic future.

According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria is richly endowed with both human and natural resources capable of driving sustainable growth, security, and global competitiveness. However, he stressed that these advantages can only be fully realised through competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership.

Obi argued that national development depends on leaders who prioritise investment in education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions rather than what he described as the politics of consumption.

“Nigeria’s future is bright, but only if we make the deliberate choices that will move our country from consumption to production, from poverty to prosperity, and from division to unity,” Obi stated.

He added that embracing good governance, fiscal discipline, and productive partnerships with the international community would help build an inclusive economy that benefits all Nigerians while restoring the country’s reputation on the global stage.

Obi’s comments come as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, with discussions increasingly centred on governance, economic reforms, and national development.
