2027: Senator Umeh Alleges Plot to Stop NDC, Says PMP Being Used to Block Party’s Registration

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Victor Umeh, has alleged that the Peace Movement Party (PMP) is being used as a tool to prevent the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) from participating in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Monday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Umeh argued that the NDC was unfairly targeted despite having been duly registered months before legal challenges emerged.

According to him, the party became the subject of litigation immediately after prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other opposition leaders, aligned with it.

“PMP is being used to block the NDC’s participation in the 2027 election.

“When Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and some of us joined the NDC on May 3, the very next day, May 4, an application was filed seeking to set aside the party’s registration, even though the NDC had already been registered for about five months,” Umeh said.

The senator also dismissed claims that the NDC unlawfully adopted the victory-sign logo, insisting that the symbol is globally recognized and cannot be exclusively claimed by the PMP.

He explained that a political party only acquires exclusive rights to a logo after it has been officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as part of its registration documents.

“The logo does not belong to the PMP because it is not a registered political party. A symbol only becomes exclusive to a party once it is registered with INEC as part of that party’s official registration. After that, no other political party can use it because it legally belongs to the registered party,” he added.

Umeh’s comments come after a Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, set aside its earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party, further complicating the party’s legal battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
