The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of an application challenging the revocation of his bail.
Presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, issued the order after dismissing an application filed by Sowore seeking his recusal from the case over allegations of bias.
In a brief ruling, the court directed that Sowore remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of his motion for a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant earlier issued for his arrest.
Justice Umar subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24, 2026, for hearing of the application.
The motion for stay was filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Earlier, Sowore arrived at the court premises accompanied by supporters and members of his movement, some of whom carried placards in solidarity with him.
The court had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to Sowore after he failed to appear for his trial. Following an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), Justice Umar also issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
Sowore is currently facing prosecution by the DSS over allegations that he made defamatory and false claims against President Bola Tinubu. The charges stem from comments he posted on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts, in which he allegedly referred to the President as “a criminal.”
The case is expected to resume on June 24 when the court will consider the application seeking to suspend the enforcement of the bail revocation order.
