Tinubu: Nigerian Youths Will Vote Me Out If I Fail on Economy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has acknowledged the growing pressure on his administration to deliver economic relief, warning that Nigeria’s youthful population could vote him out of office if the government fails to address the country’s economic challenges.

Speaking on Thursday at the Africa CEO Forum, Tinubu described Nigerian youths as energetic, demanding, and unwilling to tolerate excuses from political leaders.

“We have a very dynamic youthful population, restless and not ready to accept any excuses. As a politician, if I don’t prepare them for that, they will vote me out,” the President stated.

Tinubu also highlighted his economic reforms and governance record, particularly his tenure as governor of Lagos State, which he described as a model for economic growth and revenue generation.

“Lagos is the fifth-largest economy in Africa. I’m very proud of the legacy I left behind there, and I’m still monitoring it,” he said.

The President stressed the importance of removing bureaucratic obstacles to encourage foreign direct investment and improve investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

According to him, transparency, accountability, and strong governance remain critical to attracting global investors.

“Investment is very cowardly unless you are transparent, accountable and forthright,” Tinubu said, adding that African nations must strengthen collaboration and negotiate collectively on global economic matters.

He further revealed that Nigeria is on track to attract nearly $20 billion in foreign direct investments this year, describing it as evidence of growing investor confidence in the country’s reform agenda.

Tinubu also referenced an article he wrote for the Financial Times, where he discussed the role of international rating agencies and the need for fairer economic assessments of African economies.
