A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Seyi Makinde has launched a scathing attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing his recent media appearance as reckless, divisive and unbecoming of a public official.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group accused Wike of verbally attacking prominent Nigerians and engaging in what it termed “an unsolicited display of political recklessness.”
The faction further criticised the minister’s media outing, alleging that it lacked decorum and was funded with public resources.
According to the statement, the appearance was “a performance full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
The group stated that rather than responding directly to the minister’s claims, it considered it more important to apologise to Nigerians for previously supporting Wike’s political rise, including his emergence as governor and later minister.
“We regret offering a platform to a person whose conduct and utterances have become a national embarrassment,” the statement read.
The faction also called on individuals allegedly defamed by the minister to seek legal redress, insisting that no public office holder is above the law.
On the lingering internal crisis within the PDP, the group dismissed claims regarding the existence of a “National Leader” position in the party, maintaining that such a role is not recognised by the party’s constitution.
It further assured party members that ongoing activities, including the sale of nomination forms, preparations for primaries and plans for the national convention, would continue uninterrupted.
The statement suggested that Wike’s recent remarks may have stemmed from frustration over what it described as his inability to influence the direction of the party, particularly in determining the emergence of its presidential candidate.
Addressing legal matters referenced by the minister, the faction said it was awaiting Certified True Copies of relevant court judgments and challenged Wike and his allies to publicly clarify the issues surrounding the cases.
