Obi Meets Jonathan, Signals Strategic Talks Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has described his recent closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan as productive, noting that discussions were centred on Nigeria’s future and the need for collective national progress.

Obi, who led a delegation of prominent South-East leaders to Jonathan’s residence on Monday, said the engagement is part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi revealed that the meeting involved candid and constructive dialogue on the country’s pressing challenges.

“Our discussions were frank, thoughtful, and anchored on the urgent need to reposition Nigeria on the path of unity, security, stability, productivity, and inclusive governance,” he stated.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current socio-economic realities demand greater collaboration among leaders across regional and political divides.

“At a time when our nation continues to grapple with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and deepening social divisions, it has become imperative that leaders across regions come together to reflect, consult, and act in the overall interest of the Nigerian people,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor further emphasised that the leadership Nigeria requires must be driven by merit and service rather than personal ambition.

“Nigeria today requires leadership that is guided not by personal ambition, but by competence, character, capacity, and compassion. Governance is not about sharing what is left, but about creating what is needed,” he added.

Obi also advocated a shift in Nigeria’s economic model, calling for a transition from a consumption-driven system to one focused on production through the effective utilisation of the country’s human and natural resources.

Looking ahead, he described the 2027 elections as a pivotal moment for the nation.

“The 2027 elections must not just be seen as another political exercise, but as a critical opportunity to reset the trajectory of our country,” Obi noted, adding that the polls should prioritise the welfare of citizens, including access to quality education, a conducive environment for businesses, and improved national security.

The meeting was attended by Igbo elders, senators of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the South-East, and other political associates.
