Yesufu Slams “Tribal” Label on Obi’s Supporters, Calls Attacks ‘Pathetic’

Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has strongly condemned what she described as coordinated political attacks against the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Yesufu’s reaction follows remarks by former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, who, during a recent podcast interview, alleged that Obi’s support base is largely driven by ethnic sentiment. Sani claimed that most of Obi’s supporters come from his ethnic background and argued that a presidency under the former Anambra State governor would not bring significant change to Nigeria.

Responding via her official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Yesufu dismissed the claims as unfounded and outdated. She described the narrative as both “laughable” and “pathetic,” insisting that it fails to reflect the diverse nature of Obi’s support base.

According to her, the notion that Obi’s backing is tribal had already been disproven during the 2022 political campaigns. She maintained that supporters of the Labour Party candidate emerged from all regions of the country, demonstrating a broad-based national appeal.

Yesufu further argued that the continued focus on Obi by members of the ruling party and its supporters suggests a recognition of his political relevance. She alleged that such criticisms are driven by concerns over his perceived threat to those currently in power.

The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions and competing narratives surrounding the Labour Party’s performance and influence following the 2023 general elections.
