APC Blasts Makinde Over “Operation Wetie” Remark, Calls Statement Dangerous and Reckless

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his recent reference to “Operation Wetie,” describing his remarks as irresponsible and capable of inciting violence.

Makinde made the comment on Saturday while addressing the national summit of opposition political party leaders in Ibadan. During his speech, he warned against what he described as a growing and dangerous concentration of legislative power under a single political party.

“For those that are carrying on as if there’s no tomorrow, they should remember that ‘Operation Wetie’ started from here. This is the same Wild Wild West,” the governor said.

“Operation Wetie,” a phrase rooted in Yoruba language meaning “wet him,” is historically linked to the political violence that rocked Nigeria’s Western Region in the mid-1960s. The period, particularly following the disputed 1965 regional elections, was marked by widespread unrest, including the burning of homes and attacks on political opponents.

Reacting swiftly, the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, condemned Makinde’s statement. The party expressed concern that a sitting governor and chief security officer would invoke such a violent historical reference, warning that it could trigger unrest.

In its statement released on Sunday, the party described Makinde’s remarks as an incitement that could lead to “anarchy, murderous rage, and widespread lawlessness.”

“By his incitement to violence, Makinde has shown himself to be unworthy of the high office he occupies,” the APC stated.

The party also called on security and intelligence agencies to take appropriate action, emphasizing that constitutional immunity does not exempt public officials from accountability when their statements threaten national stability.

“Makinde must be reminded that constitutional immunity from prosecution is not immunity from accountability for threats or acts against national security,” the statement added.

The APC further dismissed concerns about the emergence of a one-party state, attributing the opposition’s challenges to internal disarray. It criticized key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing them of failing to build strong and stable political platforms.

Reaffirming its stance, the party maintained that no individual, regardless of status, should make statements capable of endangering lives or undermining Nigeria’s democratic progress.

The APC concluded by expressing confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections, reiterating its commitment to mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and agenda.
