OAU Breaks Silence on Peter Obi Lecture Controversy, Cites Protocol and Security Concerns

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has addressed the controversy surrounding a proposed lecture involving former presidential candidate Peter Obi, firmly denying claims that the institution embarrassed the high-profile guest.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, clarified that the situation stemmed from a lack of proper communication rather than any intentional slight.

According to the statement, the invitation to Obi was initiated by a group within the student body without formally notifying the university authorities in advance. The management noted that it only became aware of the planned event—and the stature of the guest—on Friday, barely 24 hours before the scheduled lecture.

OAU emphasised that events involving prominent figures such as Obi require sufficient notice to allow for comprehensive planning. This includes coordinating security and logistics in collaboration with agencies like the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

The university explained that due to the short notice, it was unable to complete the necessary arrangements, leading to the decision not to approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event.

Management stressed that the move was made strictly in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to institutional procedures—not as a sign of disrespect toward Obi, whom it described as a highly regarded figure.

Reaffirming its openness to hosting distinguished personalities, the Vice Chancellor, Adebayo Simeon Bamire, stated that all engagements must follow established protocols.

The university also called on students, staff, and the general public to ensure proper procedures are followed when organising events within the campus, to avoid similar situations in the future.
