Court Grants Bail to Former Kaduna Governor El-Rufai

A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna State has granted bail to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over alleged financial misconduct charges.

The bail was granted on Tuesday by Justice Rilwan Aikawa following arguments from both the prosecution and defence. Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had arraigned the former governor on multiple counts bordering on fraud, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

According to the court ruling, El-Rufai was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum. The conditions include the submission of international passports, provision of landed property, and one surety being a serving civil servant not below Grade Level 15, while the other must be a recognised traditional ruler.

Despite the bail approval, the court ordered that the former governor remain in ICPC custody until all bail conditions are fully met.

El-Rufai is facing allegations including the approval of billions of naira for projects allegedly not executed, as well as claims of financial impropriety linked to state funds and foreign loans. He has, however, denied all the charges.

The case has been adjourned for further proceedings, while a separate matter involving the former governor remains pending before a Kaduna State High Court.
