ADC Blasts Akpabio Over ‘Opposition Excitement’ Remark on Electoral Act

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for saying he feels “excited” whenever the opposition condemns laws passed by the Senate.

Akpabio made the remark on Saturday while speaking at a reception held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu. During the event, he dismissed objections from opposition parties to the Electoral Act 2026, insisting the National Assembly had acted appropriately.

According to him, criticism from opposition groups is an indication that the Senate had done the right thing.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, the ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Senate President’s comment suggests that the Electoral Act was crafted primarily to favour the ruling government led by Bola Tinubu.

The party argued that some provisions in the law were designed to shield dishonesty, weaken opposition parties and undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.

Abdullahi also criticised a provision in the Act that reportedly removed certificate forgery as a valid ground for challenging election results, warning that such measures could have far-reaching implications for the country’s electoral integrity.

“The embedded logic of this statement exposes the subterfuge behind the entire business of the Electoral Amendment. It was all designed to make the ruling party and the President happy,” the ADC said.

The party further stated that the Senate President should be prepared for the verdict of history over his role in the passage of the 2026 Electoral Act, which it claimed was imposed on Nigerians despite strong opposition criticism.
