The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for fair and impartial application of the law in Nigeria, emphasizing that no citizen is above it. The party made the statement in support of its members, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who are currently facing legal proceedings.
In a statement on Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party continues to monitor the cases closely and reiterated its commitment to stand by members facing prosecution.
Last week, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered that Malami, currently being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre. El-Rufai, who was invited by the EFCC on February 16, remained in their custody until February 18 before being transferred to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for further investigation over alleged financial misconduct.
While stressing respect for the rule of law, the ADC warned against selective justice, urging authorities to apply legal processes transparently and without political influence. The party highlighted disparities in the treatment of high-profile cases, citing instances where individuals accused of passport forgery and international conspiracy were granted bail and experienced swift court proceedings.
“Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai are first citizens of Nigeria before they are opposition leaders or party members,” the statement read. The ADC underscored that both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty, describing this as a constitutional right, not a privilege.
The party concluded by pledging to ensure its members are not intimidated or denied their rights while defending themselves in court.
