Haruna: Tech Won’t Solve All Election Woes, Glitches Inevitable

A National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Muhammed Haruna, has cautioned that technological issues are inevitable in elections, stressing the need for gradual implementation.

Haruna made the remarks on Monday during an interview with Trust TV, which was monitored by DAILY POST, while commenting on the recently passed and signed Electoral Amendment Act. President Bola Tinubu signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law just 24 hours after its approval by the National Assembly.

“There will always be glitches. Gradual implementation of technology is crucial, especially given existing infrastructure challenges,” Haruna said.

He noted that there is a common misconception that technology offers a flawless solution. “We already face difficulties transmitting simple polling unit results. Introducing additional technological layers, such as aggregating all polling unit data at the ward level for transmission, would only exacerbate these problems,” he added.

Haruna’s comments highlight INEC’s cautious approach as Nigeria increasingly integrates technology into its electoral process.
