ASUU Resumes Indefinite Strike at Taraba State University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo Chapter, has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike, citing the Taraba State Government’s failure to implement key provisions of an agreement reached earlier this year.

The renewed industrial action, announced in a statement on Wednesday, coincides with the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The statement, signed by the union’s Chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, said the decision followed the government’s inability to address unresolved issues contained in the January 17, 2025 agreement between both parties.

According to the union, the strike had initially been suspended in good faith to provide the state government with sufficient time to fulfil its commitments. However, ASUU maintained that no concrete or verifiable steps have been taken to implement the agreed terms.

The union identified several outstanding concerns, including the absence of a functional pension scheme for university staff, non-payment of salary arrears, failure to settle accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the non-implementation of the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.

Dr. Mbave noted that the continued delay in resolving these matters has negatively impacted staff welfare and morale, as well as the overall operations of the institution.

He added that the union resorted to industrial action only after exhausting dialogue and other peaceful engagement efforts with the state government.

The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities at Taraba State University until the issues are addressed.
