Abuja, Nigeria — The Deputy National Youth Leader of the Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party, Dr. Barry Johnson, has criticized recent court rulings affecting the party, describing the judiciary as being in “disarray” and raising concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
Johnson made the remarks during an interview with Trust TV while addressing ongoing internal divisions within the Labour Party following its historic outing in the 2023 general elections.
He maintained that the Abure-led faction remains the legitimate leadership of the party, insisting that its position is grounded in the Labour Party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
According to Johnson, certain court decisions relating to the party’s leadership dispute have weakened established internal structures and created uncertainty within the political system.
“The court of this country should be questioned. Decisions of the court are wrong,” he said, expressing dissatisfaction with judgments he believes have adverse implications for democratic governance.
Johnson further questioned whether the current political climate aligns with the democratic ideals Nigerians hope to preserve for future generations. He warned against what he described as a troubling pattern of judicial interference and a system allegedly marked by irregularities.
The Labour Party has faced persistent leadership challenges in recent months, with multiple court rulings and competing claims to authority intensifying tensions within the party.
As legal and political battles continue, observers say the outcome could significantly shape the party’s structure and its prospects ahead of future elections.
