IGP Egbetokun Bars Random Photo Ops, Cites Risk of Online Misuse

Abuja — The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a new policy restricting him from taking random photographs with individuals he does not know well, citing concerns over the misuse and weaponisation of such images in the age of social media.

Speaking at a public event in Abuja on Monday, the IGP addressed recent public backlash following the circulation of photographs showing him alongside an alleged fraudster. The images, which resurfaced online, sparked criticism and raised questions about perceived associations with controversial figures.

Egbetokun explained that in today’s digital environment, seemingly harmless photo opportunities can later be repurposed to suggest endorsement, credibility, or close association with individuals whose actions may subsequently come under scrutiny.

“I would like to apologize to those distinguished individuals whose photo requests I have declined,” he said. “This decision is not driven by pride, but by caution, at a time when photographs taken at public or special occasions can easily be weaponised.”

The controversy intensified after reports highlighted the alleged fraudster’s activities and the circulation of his photographs with several high-profile personalities, including senior government officials, politicians, celebrities, and business leaders.

According to the IGP, the decision forms part of a broader effort to safeguard the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force and to prevent any perception of inappropriate or undue association.

He described the move as a proactive step aimed at protecting both his office and the institution from reputational risks in an era of heightened online scrutiny.
