Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has condemned threats and attacks directed at the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing such actions as unacceptable and harmful to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Sani warned that intimidation and character attacks against the electoral umpire are not the right approach, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
This comes amid calls by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) urging President Bola Tinubu to immediately remove Prof. Amupitan as INEC chairman.
Reacting to the controversy, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Northern States advised the Shari’ah Council to publicly identify individuals or groups behind the campaign against the INEC boss. CAN stressed that religious platforms should not be used as a “cheap cover” to advance political interests or intimidate public officials.
Sani, in his statement, said:
“Threats, mistrusts and casting aspersions on the INEC chairman is unconscionable and not the way to go. What is most important is that the head of the electoral body should be tasked, monitored and supported to conduct credible and transparent elections for the sustenance of our democracy.”
He emphasized that safeguarding the independence of INEC remains critical to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.
