The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified efforts to broaden its political base ahead of the 2027 general election, formally calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other prominent political leaders to join the party.
The appeal followed the inauguration of the party’s North-East Zonal Congress Committee, an event the ADC described as a major step in strengthening its internal structures, deepening internal democracy, and repositioning itself as a viable platform for national leadership.
In a communiqué issued on Tuesday, the party’s factional National Chairman, Nafiu Gombe, said the inauguration ceremony, held in Gombe State on January 11, marked a renewed push to consolidate the ADC’s presence in the North-East and ensure transparent and credible congresses across the zone. The event was organised by the party’s national leadership and presided over by Dr Muhammad Muhammad.
According to the communiqué, key officials were ratified and inaugurated to oversee the zonal congress process. Mrs Patience Alex was appointed Chairperson of the North-East Zonal Congress Committee, while Mr Abayomi Adekunle was inaugurated as Chairman of the Zonal Appeal Committee.
Gombe said the development reflected the party’s resolve to build a credible and inclusive political platform capable of attracting Nigerians across party lines.
He also made a direct appeal to several serving governors, elder statesmen, and national leaders, describing their potential entry into the ADC as crucial to the party’s ambition of repositioning Nigeria.
“The authentic national leadership of the ADC passionately appeals to and invites the following eminent personalities to join the party in its mission to rebuild and reposition Nigeria,” Gombe said.
Those invited include the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed; the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri; former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki; former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan; Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde; Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti; and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The ADC stated that the experience, leadership, and patriotism of the invited figures would be instrumental in uniting efforts toward good governance, national unity, and sustainable development.
The party reiterated its commitment to offering what it described as a credible, progressive, and inclusive alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape, anchored on accountability, equity, and national cohesion.
The move comes amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, barely two weeks after the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defected to the David Mark-led ADC, further fuelling speculation about emerging alliances and shifting political loyalties.
