Fubara, Wike Speak Amid Rivers Impeachment Drama; Assembly Warns Against Court Plot

Port Harcourt, January 11, 2026 – Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara yesterday broke his silence on the ongoing impeachment proceedings against him, describing critics as “dogs barking when they don’t understand.” Speaking at a church service to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, Fubara called for calm and assured residents that the state would remain peaceful.

“I said something that dogs bark when they don’t understand. Now, see, I think a lot of you don’t understand, and that’s the reason I don’t shout, I don’t complain. I know what I have,” he said, adding that his faith in God gives him strength.

Deputy Governor Professor Odu urged attendees to maintain good conduct and continue supporting the administration in prayers, describing such backing as a pillar sustaining the government.

Meanwhile, former Rivers Governor and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike addressed calls for his sack by President Bola Tinubu, saying the President can act as he sees fit if Wike no longer offers value. Speaking at the finale of his ‘Thank You’ tour of the state, Wike emphasized the political influence of Obio/Akpor, noting that the community has historically dictated election outcomes in Rivers.

“Don’t bother about people who say ‘sack him.’ If my appointor believes that I cannot offer anything again, he has the right; it is not in your place to tell him what to do,” Wike said. He further dismissed claims by PDP loyalists, asserting that Rivers people will support Tinubu in 2027.

In a separate development, the Rivers State House of Assembly raised alarm over alleged secret plots to secure court orders illegally to halt its legislative duties. The Assembly, through Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, warned that such moves would violate constitutional provisions, including sections 188(10) and 272(3).

“These persons are fully aware of judicial pronouncements, yet they are seeking to subvert the law. All that is required is for the office holders served with allegations of gross misconduct to respond item by item,” the statement read.

The escalating political tension in Rivers underscores a brewing confrontation between the executive and legislative arms, even as key political figures call for calm and faith-driven patience.
