Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that sudden declarations of support for President Bola Tinubu do not automatically secure the governorship ticket for Rivers State in the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Sunday during a special Christmas visit to his supporters in Emohua Local Government Area, at the palace of His Royal Highness, Ohna Sergent Awuse, the Paramount Ruler of Emohua and Chairman of the South-South Traditional Rulers Forum, Wike emphasized that prior political agreements must be respected, regardless of new endorsements.
“So far as Tinubu’s own is concerned, it’s a settled matter. Anybody who wants to be governor of Rivers State cannot simply sing on your mandate. Agreement is what, agreement,” Wike said, stressing the importance of keeping promises over monetary influence.
He added, “Nobody can use us to play wayo, nobody. No matter the amount of money you say you have, it will crumble. What I’m interested in is, keep to agreement. Keep to agreement.”
The minister also addressed recent declarations of support for President Tinubu by supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, noting that the same group had earlier demanded that seats of Rivers State House of Assembly members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) be declared vacant.
Wike reiterated that no one could intimidate him or his supporters, saying, “Nobody born of a woman can intimidate us. If you like, you can have the billions of dollars. What we will say is what we will do.”
While he did not reveal the specifics of the agreements referenced, political analysts speculate that Wike’s statements may have implications for Governor Fubara’s chances of securing a second-term ticket following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
DAILY POST reports that Wike also visited his supporters in Ikwerre Local Government Area, delivering a similar message on the sanctity of political agreements.
