The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has expressed strong support for the recent joint air strikes conducted by Nigerian and United States military forces targeting ISIS terrorist elements in North-West Nigeria.
National Organising Secretary of Afenifere, Abagun Kole Omololu, told Vanguard that the operation, carried out with the approval of the Federal Government, was both timely and necessary.
“The confirmation by the Defence Headquarters that these air strikes were executed with proper government approval is welcome and overdue,” Omololu said. “Afenifere unequivocally supports this decisive action, which comes after years of relentless insecurity that has held communities hostage and undermined the very fabric of the nation.”
He stressed that the involvement of the United States in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts deserves recognition, pointing to the decades-long vacuum created by ineffective governance. “For far too long, innocent Nigerians have faced attacks, abductions, and destruction of property, while insufficient measures were taken to confront terrorist strongholds,” he said.
Omololu added that true sovereignty is measured by the state’s ability to protect citizens, enforce the rule of law, and secure national borders. “The lives of Nigerians and national peace must take precedence over political sentiment or populist critique,” he noted.
Highlighting the Federal Government’s swift and coordinated response, he urged all citizens, political leaders, and civil society actors to support the fight against terrorism. “Now is the time for solidarity, constructive collaboration, and unwavering commitment to eradicating terror,” he said.
He also commended the professionalism and bravery of both Nigerian and U.S. forces. “Their courage and decisive action should be applauded. Afenifere reaffirms its support for any measures—domestic or joint—that ensure Nigerians can live safely, free from the scourge of terror,” Omololu concluded.
