The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has pulled out of the forthcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025.
The party announced its withdrawal on Friday, blaming a lack of confidence in the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission (BOSIEC) and what it described as the “excessive” cost of expression of interest and nomination forms.
According to a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Amos Adziba, the decision followed a State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held in Maiduguri.
Titled “Why We’re Boycotting Borno LG Polls,” the statement accused BOSIEC of failing to provide credible assurances that the election would be free, fair, and transparent.
Adziba said the electoral body “did not give opposition parties substantial reasons to build confidence in the credibility and fairness of the election,” adding that the high cost of forms further demonstrated BOSIEC’s disregard for the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians.
The PDP also faulted the state government for declining to amend the electoral law to allow councillors’ results to be announced at ward levels and chairmanship results at local government headquarters — a reform the party believes would reduce manipulation.
“Since the state government has not amended the bill, it means it will be business as usual for the APC to ambush other political parties with electoral fraud,” the statement added.
With the PDP now out of the race, concerns continue to mount over the credibility and competitiveness of the December 13 polls.
