Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has opened up on why he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his decision as a “spiritual assignment” tied to the future and stability of the state.

Fubara, who announced his defection earlier in the week, received his APC membership card on Friday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, from the party’s state chairman, Chief Tony Okocha.

Speaking during the brief ceremony, the governor said his switch to the ruling party was aimed at aligning Rivers State with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection efforts and ensuring a harmonious working relationship with the Presidency.

“This is indeed a spiritual assignment because it concerns the safety, progress, and growth of Rivers State,” Fubara stated.
“We cannot pursue a different direction when the President is pursuing another. Joining the APC is part of our commitment to ensure a seamless working relationship and to contribute meaningfully to his reelection efforts in Rivers State.”

The governor expressed appreciation for the warm reception from the party leadership, noting that his move was driven by a desire to safeguard the state’s political stability and development trajectory.

Fubara also pledged total support for the party’s structure in the state.
“This is now your home, Mr Chairman. You are welcome here anytime. We will keep the APC active and fully functional in Rivers State, and every need of the party will be taken care of,” he assured.

The governor’s defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State, setting the stage for new alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
