The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) installed more than 187,000 meters for new customers in September and October, marking a significant push in the country’s metering efforts.

NERC disclosed this in its latest Metering Fact Sheet released on Friday, noting that the figures reflect steady progress in closing Nigeria’s long-standing metering gap.

According to the commission, 80,943 customers received meters in September, while installations surged to 106,822 in October. The month-on-month increase helped raise the national metering rate from 55.37% to 56.07%.

During the same period, the number of active electricity customers rose marginally from 12.03 million to 12.07 million. Total metered customers increased from 6.66 million to 6.77 million.

NERC highlighted a “remarkable improvement” by Aba Power, which lifted its metering rate from 69.49% in September to 78.20% in October.

Eko and Ikeja DisCos maintained their positions as top performers, each sustaining metering levels above 84%. Abuja and Ibadan DisCos also recorded steady meter additions, contributing to the overall national growth.

However, the report noted that several distribution companies still remain below the 50% metering threshold, indicating that substantial gaps persist across the sector.
