The internal crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State escalated on Thursday as 30 out of 32 State Executive Committee (SEC) members voted to remove Alphonsus Eba as state chairman.
Eba, however, dismissed the impeachment as “a joke taken too far,” insisting the action is illegal and will not stand.
“My purported impeachment is a joke taken too far. God will speak at the appropriate time. I won’t say more than this for now,” he said.
His removal followed earlier petitions and a vote of no confidence by chapter chairmen, secretaries, and vice chairmen across the state, citing alleged misappropriation of party funds, high-handedness, and failure to pay stipends to officials at chapter and ward levels.
With the State Working Committee controlling the party secretariat siding with the SEC, APC leaders swiftly appointed Ntufam Ekum Ojogu as Acting State Chairman.
Speaking at his unveiling at the APC Secretariat in Calabar, Ojogu pledged to restore stability and rebuild the party’s grassroots structures.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to stand before you today as the Acting Chairman of our great party. The unity we display today is a testament to our resilience and our love for Cross River State. We will work day and night to deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” he said.
Ojogu maintained that Eba’s removal was the result of due process, adding that the party could no longer ignore leadership failures.
“I thank every member who stood firm for party stability. I extend sincere appreciation to the Chapter Chairmen of the 18 LGAs. Your dedication to the grassroots has kept the party’s flame alive,” he added.
He further praised ward executives, polling unit coordinators, and volunteers for sustaining the party’s structures amid rising tensions.
The development marks one of the most significant shake-ups within Cross River APC in recent years, with both camps now digging in as the crisis unfolds.
