The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has called on the leadership of the Commission’s Staff Multi-Purpose Co-Operative Society to uphold the core values of transparency, integrity and accountability in managing members’ resources.
He made the appeal while delivering his keynote address at the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election.
Amupitan urged the outgoing and incoming executives to be prudent, ensure proper financial management, and conduct internal elections that reflect fairness and credibility. According to him, corruption and mismanagement have no place in any institution built on collective trust.
“Corruption, in any form, is a poison to any institution, especially one built on collective trust,” he cautioned, stressing that every member’s contribution must be treated with utmost responsibility.
The INEC Chairman emphasised that the co-operative’s primary purpose remains the welfare of its members, particularly in the current economic climate. He noted that the executives serve only as trustees of members’ funds and must therefore maintain open books, traceable transactions and justifiable decisions.
“There must be zero tolerance for the mismanagement of members’ savings. Cooperative money is not for party celebrations. Every naira must be accounted for and channeled into profitable ventures that improve members’ welfare,” he said.
Reiterating his commitment to staff wellbeing, Amupitan urged the co-operative’s leadership to guarantee equal access to loan facilities and benefits, regardless of rank or connections. He insisted that fairness, justice and equity must guide all operations.
He also encouraged the Society to adopt forward-thinking strategies and strong investment focus to secure a resilient future for its members.
