Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), sealing his long-anticipated alignment with the coalition-backed platform gearing up to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Atiku confirmed the move on Monday via his X account, sharing a photo of himself holding his new ADC membership card with a short declaration: “It’s official.”
His defection comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, citing deepening internal rifts that had weakened the party’s cohesion.
Monday’s announcement effectively solidifies Atiku’s involvement with the broad opposition coalition he endorsed in July — a bloc bringing together political heavyweights such as Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal under the umbrella of the ADC.
Before now, Atiku and other key opposition figures had postponed formal membership registration as negotiations continued behind the scenes.
The coalition has positioned the ADC as its unifying platform for 2027, with former Senate President David Mark serving as National Chairman, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi as National Publicity Secretary.
Their coordinated entry marks one of the biggest political realignments ahead of the 2027 race, setting the stage for a fierce contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
