Special Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, has said that the Biafra agitator is fully competent to defend himself in court.
Ejimakor, who spoke to journalists after Wednesday’s court proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, maintained that Kanu’s case has become highly political, and as such, he understands the issues surrounding it more deeply than any legal practitioner.
“Take this to the bank: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is competent enough to defend himself, especially given the political elements in the case, which he understands better than any lawyer,” Ejimakor said.
Kanu, who has been in detention for years despite multiple court rulings ordering his release, recently disengaged all his lawyers, opting to represent himself. During Wednesday’s sitting, he told Justice James Omotosho that there were no valid terrorism charges against him, insisting that he had nothing to defend under a repealed law.
Justice Omotosho, however, granted Kanu another opportunity to present his defense, citing the interest of justice for both the defendant and the nation. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to November 7 for further hearing.
Kanu’s trial has spanned nearly a decade, marked by legal controversies, government defiance of court orders, and claims of political persecution.
