The Federal Government has released ₦2.31 billion to federal universities to offset outstanding arrears owed to academic and non-academic staff.
In a statement on Thursday, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, through the Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, Kamorudeen Yusuf, confirmed that the payment was processed via the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
He said universities will begin to receive the funds immediately, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to transparent, long-term reforms that guarantee staff welfare and financial stability in the tertiary education sector.
Alausa further disclosed that the government is finalising the release of third-party deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company.
According to him, the administration has also sustained funding for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities project, while plans are underway to fully integrate Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) into university salaries by 2026 to ensure prompt and predictable payments.
The minister reaffirmed that all engagements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions are being conducted in good faith, noting that all agreements will remain within realistic budgetary limits to maintain stability in the education sector.
The development comes shortly after ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed negotiations with the Federal Government.
