“I Cried the First Time, I Laughed the Second” — Soludo Recounts Emotional Visit to Enugu Ukwu and Aguleri

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has shared an emotional story about his first visit to Enugu Ukwu and Aguleri, revealing that the deplorable state of roads and lack of basic amenities once moved him to tears.

Speaking during the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship campaign rally in Anambra East on Wednesday, Soludo said his initial visit exposed the community’s struggles with bad roads, lack of hospitals, electricity, and clean water.

“The oldest man in Enugu Otu told me they needed a tarred road. I was at Enugu Ukwu Aguleri, and that’s the place I cried — publicly,” the governor said. “We drove for almost one and a half hours, and it was the worst road I had ever seen. I asked if they had a hospital — they said no. Pipe-borne water — no. Electricity — no.”

He recalled that during that visit, schoolchildren lined up along the road holding cardboard signs listing their needs — from leaking roofs to a shortage of teachers and chairs.

However, Soludo said his return visit to the area brought tears of joy instead of sorrow. “The last time I visited Enugu Ukwu and Aguleri, I saw a solar-powered borehole running, new power lines, and a brand-new general hospital with doctors and medical personnel,” he said.

He added that this time, the children no longer displayed their complaints — instead, they danced and sang as they welcomed him.

“The first time I went, I cried; the second time, I laughed,” Soludo said, describing the transformation as evidence of progress and hope. “You can’t go to a people and say there is no hope. Ours is to give hope.”
