Bayelsa Governor’s Resignation from PDP Sparks Legitimacy Debate, Says Wabara

Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised serious questions about the legitimacy of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State following his resignation from the party.

Wabara argued that by leaving the PDP—the platform on which he was elected—Governor Diri has effectively disqualified himself from holding office. According to the former Senate President, the Nigerian Constitution currently does not recognize independent candidacy, making it unconstitutional for an elected official to continue in office after abandoning the party that brought him to power.

“There is no government in Bayelsa State. There’s no democracy in Bayelsa State. Our constitution does not accommodate independent candidacy,” Wabara said. “For the government to dump the party that brought him to power and claim that he is ‘partyless’ is unconstitutional. Staying alone without a platform is an impeachable offense.”
