NPC, Kukah Centre Push for Peace Ahead of Anambra Governorship Election

Ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, the National Peace Committee (NPC) under the Secretariat of The Kukah Centre has announced plans to bring all candidates from the 16 participating political parties into a peace agreement.

Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo, Executive Director of The Kukah Centre and Head of the NPC Secretariat, made the announcement in Awka during a pre-election engagement with stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Barkindo said, “We at Kukah Centre are here to collaborate with those on the ground who understand the social and cultural fabric of Anambra. Our aim is to build on the peace that already exists.”

He added that the peace accord signing is scheduled for next week, with members of the NPC, including Chairman Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, in attendance. “We have informed the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and all candidates. This accord gives the Peace Committee the moral authority to intervene in any post-election disputes,” Barkindo noted.

Addressing concerns over election-related violence, he emphasized, “Most stories about killings are rumours or misinformation. Our responsibility is to ensure Anambra remains peaceful for generations to come.”

Barkindo outlined the committee’s expectations: “We hope for a peaceful election. With the new INEC chairman in place, we envision a transparent, credible process not just for Anambra, but as a model for Nigeria.”

He also urged candidates and voters to conduct themselves responsibly. “Candidates must lead their supporters wisely and comply with election laws. Voters should avoid spreading fake results, misinformation, or images that could incite violence. No one’s blood is worth spilling over elections,” he stressed.

Highlighting Anambra’s reputation for innovation and enterprise, Barkindo called for the state’s enterprising spirit to guide a peaceful electoral process.

The pre-election engagement drew traditional rulers, heads of security agencies, civil society representatives, media personnel, and governorship candidates. The event featured a presentation of the peace accord set to be signed by the contenders.
