NNPP Chieftain Warns Against Moving 2027 Elections to 2026, Says It Will Disrupt Democracy

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has cautioned the National Assembly against its proposed plan to shift the 2027 general elections to 2026.

Oguntoyinbo described the proposal as a move capable of derailing Nigeria’s democratic process and putting unnecessary pressure on key stakeholders.

In a statement made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, he stressed that elections require careful and adequate preparation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, and intending candidates.

“I urge the National Assembly not to move the 2027 elections to 2026. Election is a serious and important issue for national development. We don’t need to rush the political parties, the intending candidates, and INEC into preparations,” he said.

The NNPP stalwart argued that political parties need sufficient time and resources to recruit credible candidates, while candidates themselves must be allowed to plan effectively.

According to him, rushing the process could have severe consequences for governance and national stability.

“We cannot be in a perpetual election period; governance is necessary for the country’s development. The National Assembly should be cautious of the negative implications of bringing the 2027 election forward to 2026,” Oguntoyinbo added.
